I passed the electrical, plumbing and mechanical final inspections today, woohoo!! All that’s left now is the final building inspection :D Of course, for that, I need to get the stairs and upstairs carpet in, so could be a while, heh. The electrical guy scolded me for not having ceiling fans installed and/or the boxes blanked off, but passed me anyhow. The mechanical guy also “failed” me for the drain line P-trap only having 2” of clearance when the instructions required 3” and passed me on paper said he’d trust me to fix it, and come back and reject me if I didn’t. I promised I would, and fully intended to comply, but the more I think about it, all that effort for a 1” larger trap seems pretty silly. I will finish insulating the HVAC takeoffs like he said, though, that absolutely needs done.

Alright, progress today!! After months of worrying about this, pondering how the hell we were going to mount it, and how the hell we were going to lift this 100lb Air Handler 8’ in the air, we finally did it. I carefully measured the stud locations in CAD and double-checked with the stud-finder to make sure the lag bolts were solid into wood, and meshed the locations of the supports against the placement of the air handler in relation to where we’d put in the duct and cables, as the cables are going to have to line up exactly with the holes in the air handler. We decided to fab up metal brackets instead of building something out of 2×4s. Last night, I whipped out the angle grinder and cut up some #14 1 1/4” angle and 1 1/4” flatbar and bent up flanges and then this morning I bolted it all up and leveled it out. I put a piece of plywood between them- not because we need any supports (the angle should be fine) but because I worry about the air handler slipping off the one if it vibrates over time- the plywood is insurance against that.

Another pretty lazy day today, I just couldn’t get motivated to do much. I cleaned up the garage a bit more so that I can both get to the corner with the air handler and park my car! Given I finally had enough room to set up a ladder, I put up the last 2 flourescent lights in the garage and then all the receptacles in the workshop area. Also put on the receptacle for the other garage door opener and installed the other 3-way switch for the lights in the garage; I hadn’t bought enough switches when I first wired up the lights and had just wire-nutted past that switch until now.
