M

Madder Rose "Tragic Magic" (promo)

I don't care, I like the techno elements! And her voice is soothing and catchy, I was singing along the 2nd time through it.. My Star and Float to the Top are the best, but Peter and Victor is also neat. And the band when up soooooo many points in my book when they covered Black Grape's "Shake Your Money" on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic!

Magnapop "FIRE All Your Guns at Once" (promo)

Got the EP because I remembered liking them, and this is a fine balance between guys on gritty guitars and gals with the smooth melodies.

Magnet Indie Music sampler, volume 2

Tiny little comp I got for $3, but it has Beth Orton "She Cries Your Name", and also choons from Bennet, Space Needle, and The Hang Ups.

ManBREAK "Ready or Not" (promo)

Got it from the station, I didn't even realize I knew the song, I'd just heard good things about the band...

Mann, Aimee "Bachelor No.2 (or, The Last Remains of the Dodo)"

This is such a word of mouth record, and word finally got to me via Scott, who heard it from a friend the year before. I then played it for two other friends who each bought it the next day. And for once, a great record actually got recognition at the Grammies! We saw her live with Michael Penn and she is as great live as she is on this album!!

Mansun "I Can Only Disappoint U" (UK promo)

A perk of working for Virgin Radio is all the promo items, and knowing all of the songs because you listen to the station all day. This is an example of both.

Marion "Miyako Hideaway" cd1 (UK promo)

I remember really liking this when I saw the video on 120 minutes so long ago. And now I have my own copy!

Massive Attack "Mezzanine"

I now own the holy trinity of trip hop, and it is good. this is an excellent record, dark, sultry, and intelligent.

Matador Records "Everything is Nice"

You simply cannot beat the price, at 3 cds for $10. And there's rare stuff from Cat Power, Mogwai, Yo La Tengo, and Guided By Voices. But unfortunately there's also quite a bit of filler. At least the inserts were entertaining.

Matmos "The Civil War" (UK import)

Some would call this a concept album, but with Matmos, I'm not so sure. The artwork is decidedly Medieval, from the script font to the Charing-Cross-tube-station woodcuts, to the photos in full costume, and finally, to the music itself. That they can combine the hurdy gurdy and autoharp with sequencers and still make it listenable is indeed a feat.

Means to an End - The Music of Joy Division (promo)

Various bands covering Joy Division songs, the best of which is Moby's New Dawn Fades.

Medium 21 "Killings From the Dial" (UK promo)

Not being a real lover of Pavement or the general Pavement-esque sound, I must say this didn't impress me much, but I probably didn't give it as much of a chance as it deserved. You've got to me immediate to gain my attention these days, and I almost find that sad.

Melody Maker "21st Century Noise" (UK import)

This one started the downhill slide. Still had good tunes from Bellatrix, Sigur Ros, and Ooberman, but it also had swill from JJ72, Blink 182, and co.uk. blah.

Melody Maker "All the Rural Things" (UK import)

Their attempt at a roughly Glastonbury-themed compilation that went really wrong. Good songs from Moby, Ian Brown, and Day One, but utter crap from JJ72, Soulwax, Crashland, and Feeder.

Melody Maker "Steve Lamacq's Bootleg Session Volume 3" (UK import)

Another stunning comp, this time with my all-time favourite deejay introducing each act. It's got Supergras, Coldplay, and (the unfortunately named) Sukpatch.

Melody Maker "The Maker's Dozen" (UK import)

Good comp with songs from Delakota, Seafood, Ooberman, Scott 4, and Younger Younger 28s. well done.

Melody Maker "The Sound City Sessions" (UK import)

Fantastic live compilation with songs I really wanted! Thisd one has all the big names on it, but also coldplay, Boo Radleys, Clinic, Guided By Voices, and Salako!

Metallica "Load"

The fathers of metal fail to kick ass once again. I wasn't really old enough to appreciate their first albums, but at least I appreciate the black album!

Microphone Records "Autumn 2000 Top 10" (Latvian promo)

Got this direct from BrainStorm's label and it has a sprinkling of good songs, but also some pretty awful songs as well.

Midfield General "Generalisation" (UK import)

Even if I hadn't lived in Brighton (and, more specifically, the Big Beat Boutique) for a year, I'd still love this cd. It's along the same lines as Fatboy Slim, but it's got more soul and doesn't make you feel like a cheap club kid when it's over.

And the bonus -- 'Midfielding' is the funniest song ever written. Go discover for yourself. "...like the eyes of an old Russian lady, with her arm caught in a loo..."

Mike and Rich "Expert Knob Twiddlers" (UK Import)

So rare, I had to order direct from the UK record company... And it was well worth it. Got a good price, and it's some of Richard D James' (and Mike from mu-ziq) most ear-friendly work. Very accessible, but without comprimising any artistic integrity.

Ministry "Lay Lady Lay" (promo)

Al, Al, Al. What happened after Psalm 69, man? What happened to you?

Ministry "Psalm 69"

Classic! I grew up with these guys. "Jesus Built my Hotrod" should be a staple for every US citizen!

Moby "Everything is Wrong" (signed)

A raver's dream come true. Danceable music with intelligence and class (ok, so maybe not your average raver music, afterall). Moby continues to amaze me with incredibly beautiful music like "When It's Cold I'd Like to Die".

Moby "Honey Remixes"

I love this song, and it was the only release it's on. and I still can't figure out what the hell they're saying... argh! (just because it's mostly remixes, hence the title)

Moby "Play" (signed)

Wow. Catchy tunes and intelligence rarely go together, but Moby has done it. I've listened to this constantly, it's a gem.

Moby "We Are All Made of Stars" (UK promo)

I wasn't impressed with this song, but I don't argue about free goods. Granted, it's grownon me a bit, but it's still not enough to redeem the wet blanket that is "18".

Mogwai "Come On Die Young"

It took me twice seeing them live to admit (finally) that I needed this album. Post-rock has never been better. I love 'cody', 'kappa', and of course, 'christmas steps'.

Mogwai "EP+2"

I traded Brian my UK copy for his US one, since his had 2 extra tracks he already had, and I didn't how nice of him! I love 'Burn Girl Prom Queen', and not just for the title.

Mogwai/Magoo "Do the Rock Boogaloo" (UK import)

Can I say again how much I love Fierce Panda? They get two great post-rock bands to cover Black Sabbath and release it as a single. rawwwwwwk!

Mojave 3 "Love Songs on the Radio" (promo)

Got this at the station. still fuzzy blankets.

Mojave 3 "Out of Tune"

The only way to describe this is 'warm fuzzy blanket music'. Because it's just that. Music for curling up on a snowy day with a hot chocolate by the fire. Beautiful, and (forgive me) poignant.

Moloko "Do You Like My Tight Sweater?" (promo)

Her voice takes some geting used to, but this has such a great groove to it. Whodathunk a song named "Killa Bunnies" would be as damn cool as it is?? Also enchanting is "Where is the What if the What is in Why?". great titles.

Monitor This! "Winter 1998"

Got this from (how bizarre) my grandparents. It has Placebo, Built to Spill, Squirrel Nut Zippers, and a bizarre rendition of 'Suzy Snowflake' by Soul Coughing.

Morcheeba "Big Calm"

I instantly loved Part of the Process, but Over and Over and Let Me See, and every other tune on here is beautiful and mellow. Skye's voice is like buttah. or honey. or honey-buttah.

Morcheeba "Fragments of Freedom" (lmt ed UK import)

This version has a cd-rom movie of the making of the album with it... The album itself covers everything stylistically, from rock to reggae to trip hop to calypso to rap to hipgop to soul and back again. and I like it.

Morcheeba "The Sea/Big Calm" (UK promo)

Ok, this was purely an ego thing. I own both of the songs on the album, but this promo was just too cool to pass up. I'm weak.

Morcheeba "Who Can You Trust?" (promo)

Got it used, after many recommendations from the Portishead list and Janey. And Skye's voice is so mellow and smooth/smoove. It's such a relaxing cd. a great sex cd.

Morgan "Sitting in the Sun" (EU import)

Bizarre little beats that beg you to pay attention and send it love. For all its pleas, I still don't buy it.

Morning Becomes Eclectic "Really Rare On Air" (homemade)

I took the acoustic radio performances off their website and made a cd of the various gems. Like Eels doing Magnapop's "Open the Door", Whale's "Kickin", Sixpence None the Richer covering The La's "There She Goes"... HM

Motorhomes "It's Alright" (UK promo)

These guys played an afternoon acoustic set at my university pub in Brighton, and we couldn't have asked for nicer guys or a better set. The first people there also got promo cds, which was another bonus!

Mull Historical Society "Loss" (UK import, signed)

I first discovered them after 'Watching Xanadu' was Playlouder's Single of the Week, but upon purchasing it, I realised that album half the album could've qualified. Favourites include 'I Tried', 'Annimal Cannabus', 'This Is Not Who We Were', and 'Barcode Bypass'. And when I went to their ill-fated in-store gig and signing at the
HMV on Oxford Street, I at least got it signed (along with having a bizarre conversation with one of them about the Philly suburbs).

Mull Historical Society "Us" (UK promo)

Barely a year after their debut album, MHS suddenly have a whole 'nother crop of songs pouring out of them (well, him, really). On paper they all seem well and good - opening single 'The Final Arrears' moves in all the right ways, and 'Live Like the Automatics' gets the immediate stomper label. Overall, though, something's missing for me. I want to love it as much as "Loss", but there's a certain something lacking that I just can't find inside.

Muse "Hullaballoo" (UK import)

The first cd of this set is B-Sides, the second live tracks. I prefer the second since they're already familiar to me, with 'Space Dementia', 'In Your World', and (of course) 'Muscle Museum' taking the cake.

Muse "Origin of Symmetry" (UK import)

This is so over the top, and I love it. Perfect summer doldrum music, starting with 'New Born' and climaxing in the ultimate Nina Simone cover, 'Feelin Good', which made me sit up like a bolt the first time I heard it.

Music Madness sampler

A free college tour that came through Penn State. I really liked Trinket, and they were nice guys. Theirs is the best on here.

Muzik magazine "Dance to the Underground" (UK import)

Oh, how I wanted this to be as good as the Miss Kittin mix! But alas, it was just a short mix with remixes I already had, and not particularly cleverly pieced together, either. Shame, but at least it was cheap.

My Vitriol "Moodswings" (UK import)

I liked Finelines enough, but I never loved it. After hearing this "comeback" single, it doesn't sound like they've done any growing while they were away, frankly.

Mysteries of Life "Downhill" (promo)

OK, it was free. and I admit, I picked it up because of the artwork. and it's not half bad. blissfully average, in fact. average alternative. but I still like the artwork.
